Broxburn Tournament

Broxburn Athletic Colts

7 August 2010

1997 squad

ACO's pre-season preparations received a welcome boost when the boys picked up winners medals from the Broxburn Tournament. ACO started slowly but improved as the tournament went on and came out on top of the 4 team league on goal difference after a close battle with the home team. The games were 30 minutes each which gave all the boys an opportunity to test out their pre-season fitness!

AC Oxgangs  2-1  Polbeth United CFC

Scorers: Murray, Lewis

A scrappy game with ACO on top for most of it. Murray headed home the first goal after a scramble at a corner before Polbeth equalised with a long ball which saw the pacy striker just beat Jonny with a lob. Harry then set up the winner with a great run down the right and the perfect pull back for Lewis to tap in past the keeper.

AC Oxgangs  1-1  Broxburn Athletic Colts FC

Scorer: Shaun

A tough and finely balanced game with both teams creating chances. Tom blocked a goal bound shot from Broxburn before Jonny made an excellent instinctive save to a flick from the resulting corner. ACO produced some flowing moves with Callum going close with a shot and Ross almost managing to beat the keeper before Elliot produced a fabulous ball through the Broxburn defence which left Shaun one on one with the keeper - Shaun kept his cool and slotted the ball home to give ACO the lead. It looked like ACO were going to hold on for the win but a good break down their left hand side saw Broxburn equalise with a minute left. No time for ACO to respond and the gave ended level - probably a fair result.

AC Oxgangs  3-0  Queensferry Thistle FC

Scorers: Harry, Shaun, Lewis

ACO knew that, to have any chance of winning the tournament, they had to win their last game and probably by a decent margin. The boys put Queensferry under pressure from the start with the first chance falling to Tom who headed just wide from a corner. Queensferry then had a spell and forced a couple of saves from Jonny before ACO produced their goal of the tournament with a real team goal which started in defence with Tom bringing the ball out to Fin who passed to Ross who played a great ball to Harry who was in the clear - the finish was low into the bottom corner and ACO had the lead.

This goal was full of sharp passing and quick thinking - exactly the sort of play the coaches are looking for. Harry was involved again as ACO quickly made it 2-0. Another break down the right and another cutback - this time Shaun was the man in the right place and it was 2-0. ACO were well on top and pushing on to get more goals. Lewis attacked down the right, passed to Murray who shot - the keeper parried but Lewis was there for the close range tap in and ACO were 3-0 up.

The touchline supporters thought that we might need another and there were a couple of chances with a low cross from Lewis running along the goal line without an ACO foot being able to force it home and Tom playing Lewis in but this time the keeper saved the shot. The game finished 3 -0 and ACO had an anxious wait...

The Broxburn/Polbeth game ended 1-0 to Broxburn which meant that ACO and Broxburn both had two wins and a draw but ACO took the cup by one goal on goal difference.

This was a great morale booster for the boys heading into the new season and it showed that the hard fitness work preseason had the boys in good physical shape. The passing football was pleasing for all to see too. Let's keep the momentum going with our last friendly on Thursday before the season's opener next weekend!!
